Balancing The storm within: Calming the storm

Holistically Honey is a space for encouragement, self-care, and natural wellness as we learn to move through life with intention and grace

Peace and Blessings,

It’s time for those spring showers. Water is needed for growth, but at times all that water can feel like you’re drowning. You get the sweet sunshine over your life and things seem to be flowing then suddenly, you are met with a storm that won’t let you take a breath. The little air you have feels like it’s being snatched right from your throat.

What happens when the showers become too much?

We dance in the rain. We need calming in the storm.

Yes, I know that may sound like a crazy concept, but have you ever tried to fight against a storm? Eventually, while you’re being poured on and the winds of life are blowing you around, you will tire out. So instead of using your energy to fight what you’re being faced with, do the work to flow with it.

The process of dancing in the storm includes surrender, regulation, stillness, and release.
This dance brings clarity. It may look different for everyone, but recognizing that you are doing it will help you remember the storm always calms eventually.

Surrender

Surrender in the midst of the storm is exactly that stop fighting, even if just for a moment.

When you’re moving with the storm in chaos, your thoughts and actions are reactions, not intentions. Surrendering is taking the time to pause and gather yourself.

This could look like getting into a yoga pose called Savasana which is lying flat on your back, arms and legs relaxed, palms facing up, eyes closed. Rest here for at least five minutes.

Or it may be as simple as sitting in a quiet space and allowing your body to relax.

This is not sleep.
This is stillness.
This is choosing to stop fighting and simply be.

Regulation

Regulation flows naturally from surrender.

In the midst of a chaotic storm, it can feel like nothing is in your control but regulating what you can begins with something simple: your breath.

Intentional breathing can calm your nervous system, signaling your body to shift from fighting to resting.

One method:

  • Exhale completely
  • Inhale through your nose (filtering the nonsense)
  • Fill your lungs fully
  • Hold for a few seconds
  • Release through your mouth with sound

That sigh you were told not to make as a child?
Let it out. Release it all.

Another method:

  • Place one hand on your chest, one on your belly
  • Inhale through your nose, feeling both rise
  • Let your belly rise more than your chest
  • Exhale slowly through pursed lips

Whatever method you choose, feel the control you do have, even in the storm.

Stillness

Once you have surrendered and regulated, you then enter stillness the power of the present moment.

This may look like meditation, listening for your higher power, or simply sitting in silence. Call it what you want, just be intentional with it.

If you’re new to stillness:

  • Sit or lie comfortably
  • Close your eyes
  • Breathe naturally
  • Begin counting your breaths

Notice the world around you… then gently return to your breath.

Keep counting until you lose count.
That’s when your mind begins to quiet.

If your thoughts return, go back to the breath.

This is the center of the storm where you realize you can feel, honor, and regulate your emotions all at once.

Release

Releasing in the middle of a storm can feel unnatural, but it is necessary.

Release is letting go and trusting that things will move as they are meant to.

Peace is not always getting what you want.
Peace is knowing you will be okay either way.

Peace is trusting your journey:

  • the highs that bring joy
  • the lows that stretch your growth

Release is accepting that you cannot stay in a space you’ve outgrown, even if it once felt safe.

Ways to release:

  • Let go mentally
  • Journal what you’re holding
  • Create space for growth beyond the storm

Journaling Prompts

  • Play instrumental or classical music and write or draw freely, no structure, no judgment
  • Describe who you are after this storm passes (include senses: smell, color, sound)
  • Write a letter to yourself filled with kindness, hope, and love

You may realize… these are the words you needed to hear all along.

The storm will pass. There is calmness in the storm.

We all face storms that water our growth.
How we move through them shapes our experience.

So ask yourself:
Are you fighting the rain… or dancing in it?

May you find peace and ease along your path.
Until next time, continue showing up for your healing.

Gratitude,

Honey
